Did you know…………?

Detroit homicides are up 17 percent in 2006, while non-fatal shootings have risen 27 percent.
There has been over 235 homicides in 2006, compared with 203 at this time a year ago with most of those deaths involving firearms.
That non-fatal shootings through July totaled 877. There were 693 in the first seven months of last year.
Detroit is on pace to exceed 400 killings by the end of the year. Last year's total was 359.

The program is Monday thru Thursday from 4pm to 7pm.
(If you need to be there a little earlier, we will be available.)

Students must be ages 10 -14 and have reliable transportation.

There is a cost of $15 a week which equals out to a little more than $1 an hour.

DETROIT -- Detroit2LA Entertainment and Project: A.R.T. – Wayne State University Chapter have collaborated on a once-in-a-lifetime event entitled the ZigiDee Boom Hip Hop Fest to take place on Wednesday, September 14, 2005, from 12noon to 8pm, outside on Wayne State University’s campus.
This event has the opportunity to hold the attention of at least 30,000 students during the first full week of Fall Term 2005. The event will take place right outside of the Student Center Building starting at lunch and ending after dinner-time. Also, in close vicinity is the state-of-the-art David Adamany Undergraduate Library and four newly constructed student dormitories.
The ZigiDee BooM Hip Hop Fest will feature famously notorious acts from Detroit to Los Angeles including, but not limited to, Slum Village, Proof of D12, 3rd Eye Open Collective, Versiz, radio personality FOOLISH from FM98 WJLB, comedian The Great Bo Bo Lamb, DJ Glenn and other nationally recognized poets, rappers and break-dancers.
As of this date, this event still has some slots available for quality performers including musicians, dancers, DJ’s, rappers, poets, singer, etc. of all ages. No one is too young or too old. The promoters of this event are also soliciting vendors and sponsors who are looking to expose their products and services to this prime target market. All donations are 100% tax deductible. Due to Overwhelming Demand More Slots Available

DETROIT – Due to overwhelming demand, Project: A.R.T., Detroit’s ONLY Hip Hop Arts Organization, will be opening up an additional 10 slots for the ZigiDee BooM Hip Hop Summer Camp at Butzel Recreation Center located at 7737 Kercheval starting Monday, June 27th. Students who want to participate must be ages 12-17 and will receive a bio, a photo (headshot), a demo, and a resume at the end of the eight-week program. Students will also be a part of a play that will be presented at the Max M. Fisher Theater in the Fall. The program runs from 1pm to 7pm and will feature Hip Hop Arts instruction, hair braiding classes, Spanish lesson, safety courses, talent shows, graphic arts and open mic. Student will be provided with lunch and a snack.
Registration will take place at Butzel Recreation Center on Thursday, June 2, 2005 from 5pm to 7pm and Thursday, June 9, from 5pm to 7pm. To register at a different time and location please call Project: A.R.T. at (313) 921-8821. The cost of the summer camp is less that $10 a day per student.
This program is sponsored, in part, by "Foolish" of Foolish Enterprises and radio personality for WJLB FM 98, the City of Detroit Butzel Family Center through the Detroit Recreation Department and Holla! Magazine.
Project: A.R.T. is also looking for guest speakers, entertainers and sponsors of the the ZigiDee BooM Hip Hop Variety Show at the Max M. Fisher Theater in the Fall of 2005.

"Juvies" comes to Detroit

DETROIT – On Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at 5:30 p.m., Project: A.R.T., in collaboration with Chance Films and Alternatives For Girls (AFG), will present a FREE screening of the Chance Films documentary “Juvies.” The FREE screening will take place at the Alternatives For Girls’ Ford Community Room located at 903 W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit.
“Juvies” is a documentary narrated by screen actor, Mark Wahlberg with a poetry reading by rap artist, Mos Def. The film explores the “increasingly important issue of prosecuting juveniles as adults and incarcerating them in adult facilities.”
The purpose of this screening is to “reach as many people as possible in order to educate them about the current juvenile justice system and the need for reform.”
Project: A.R.T. has visited the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility on a bi-weekly basis since July 2004 to facilitate their ZigiDee BooM Hip Hop Workshops with efforts to instruct student on the business and entrepreneurial aspects of the Hip Hop industry. Additionally, Project: A.R.T. conducts the “That’s What’s Up” Substance Abuse Prevention Tour at the Catherine C. Blackwell Institute on Detroit’s eastside.
“Project: A.R.T.’s mission is to help decrease juvenile delinquency,” said Sista Sara, Program Coordinator for the youth organization. “We are happy to have the option to work locally with Alternatives For Girls and nationally with Chance Films. This offers a great opportunity to get the word out to student and their parents about some of the problems within the juvenile justice system.”
“Alternatives For Girls (AFG) is concerned about the extent to which minors are being waived into, and incarcerated in, the adult correctional system,” said Amanda L. Good, CEO of AFG. “Our experience working with homeless and high-risk girls and young women has taught us that the most effective interventions, in most cases, involve support for education, for finding and sustaining employment at a living wage, and for developing a positive support network in the community. Most offending youth can benefit from treatment and community-based services. Incarceration in an adult facility robs our youth of those opportunities.”

FREE CONCERT FOR VOTERS

DETROIT – In the last few weeks before the General Election, advocates for voter participation are looking for a variety of ways to Get Out the Vote especially for those between the ages of 18 and 35. Project: A.R.T., Detroit’s ONLY Hip Hop Arts organization, has found a way.
One the evening of the General Election, November 2, 2004, Project: A.R.T. – Wayne State University (WSU) Chapter, in collaboration with WSU Student Council, will present the “Amp’D2VOTE” Concert. The concert featuring electronic soul recording artist, Amp Fiddler, will be free-of-charge to participants in the election that day.
This Voter Participation program will take place on Wayne State’s campus in the General Lectures Bldg., Room 150. The General Lectures Bldg. is located on the corner of W. Warren and Anthony Wayne Dr. (aka Third St.) just east of the Lodge Fwy. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the Amp’D2VOTE Concert will start at 7 p.m.
All ages are welcome to attend and everybody will have the opportunity to vote on-site with Project: A.R.T.’s informal poll before gaining entrance.
“Amp Fiddler is a remarkable artist and as a member of Project: A.R.T.’s Board of Directors, we felt we needed to take a stand,” said Anton Reed, Program Director for Project: A.R.T. “The sleeping giant … the voters between 18 and 35 … need different motivation and we want to help provide that motivation.”
Amp Fiddler (www.ampfiddler) is better known overseas in Japan, Great Britain and Germany where he is at the top of the charts. Fiddler has toured with Enchantment and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic. Recently, on the London-based recording label, Genuine, Fiddler released the EP “Waltz of a Ghetto Fly.” His works include collaborations with Slum Village, Brand New Heavies, D-12, Maxwell, Prince and Lucy Pearl.
“I know what it feels like to think your vote doesn’t count,” said Fiddler. “But…that’s just an excuse, because politics is a responsibility. And it’s my responsibility as an artist and a citizen to help raise awareness and encourage voter participation any way I can.”

There is so much information that I hope you take the time to really read over the upcoming events for Fall 2004.

On Thursday, October 14th, Project: A.R.T. in collaboration with the 4-H Community Center and Detroit Magic, will be hosting an AfterSchool Program Fair at 5710 McClellan (on Detroit's Eastside) for students 8-18. Some of the programs being offered is the ZigiDee BooM Hip Hop Workshop Series, The Detroit Magic Sports program with basketball, soccer and cheerleading, and the 4-H Agricultural Program. We are AVIDLY looking for volunteers as well as students. The fair will begin at 6pm. Please come and show your support.

Project: A.R.T. has recently been awarded OFFICE SPACE on Wayne State's Campus. We are now located in Room 350.5, in the Student Center Bldg. SO......

The Hip Hop Office will be holding an Open House on Thursday, Oct. 21st in Room 350.5 from 2pm to 5pm. At that time, members will be asked to sign up to be in the office at least once a week for an hour. Please be prepared to put your name on the schedule. All Members should consider this office as theirs and plan to conduct Hip Hop business out of this office.

Project: A.R.T. will be participating in the Wayne State University Homecoming Parade. All Members should be prepared to march in the Parade on Saturday, October 23rd starting as early as 7am. More information will be forthcoming by email and at the Hip Hop Office open house.

Project: A.R.T. - WSU Chapter will be decorating DISPLAY CASE #1 in the Student Center Bldg. on Monday, October 25th and 12 noon (sharp). Members that want to display something in the showcase - get with us.

Project: A.R.T. - WSU Chapter will be hosting a LITERATURE TABLE in North Commons on Tuesday, Oct. 26th in the Student Center Bldg. We are asking that members come and help man the table anytime between 10am and 3pm. Members that have literature to pass out are more than welcome to come and distribute.

Amp Fiddler joins Project: A.R.T.’s Board of Directors

Electric Soul artist, Joseph “Amp” Fiddler, best known for his accomplishments overseas, recently committed his time and resources to Detroit’s only Hip Hop Arts organization, Project: A.R.T.
Fiddler, a native Detroiter, has always wanted to pursue community activism and is no stranger, himself, to the streets of Detroit. The youngest of five siblings and a former resident of the Conant Gardens, Fiddler made a decision long ago, that when he sat in a position of strength, he would not forget to give back to the hood.
“We are proud on Amp Fiddler and his accomplishments,” said Anton Reed, Program Director for Project: A.R.T. “We are honored that Amp Fiddler has chosen our organization to make a commitment to. We believe that Amp’s contribution to this organization will prove priceless.”
Fiddler is a remarkable talent (www.ampfiddler.com) and has toured with the likes of Enchantment and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic. 4-H Community Center Celebrates 30 Years

DETROIT – On Saturday, August 21, 2004, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., the things you would normally expect to see at the Michigan State Fair will be right here in the heart of the Detroit’s eastside. The Detroit 4-H Council is hosting the first-ever “Urban 4H Fair 2004” on the grounds of the Detroit 4-H Community Center – 5710 McClellan. This event will take place rain or shine.

This Urban Fair will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the 4-H Community Center – the ONLY urban-orientated 4-H Center in the United States and will also serve as the kick-off for the 4-H Council Membership Drive.

The Metro Detroit community is invited to participate in this event which will feature produce and animal displays, arts and crafts, entertainment for children of all ages, food and lots of fun. See a karate demonstration or learn to ballroom dance. Have a BBQ dinner or enjoy some cotton candy. The kids can see and touch real farm animals and even get a horseback ride. The event is free and open to the public but there will be things to buy, vendor booths to explore and an inflatable moonwalk.

Mr. William Mills has been the Executive Director of the 4-H Community Center for all 30 years. He has worked with generations of students during his tenure and is looking forward to the celebration.

“This Urban Fair is a chance for our organization to showcase the activities and programming that we have to offer Detroiters,” Mr. Mills says. “Our 30 year commitment to Detroit highlights the role that the 4-H Community Center plays in the building and rebuilding of this city.”

Cleophus Bradley, President of the Detroit 4-H Council says, “Thousands of young people have benefited from the Detroit 4-H Center located in the heart of the eastside. The Detroit 4-H Councils invited alumni, community stakeholders, and neighbors to financially support our endeavors.”

Mark your Calendars - There's alot going on.

On Friday, June 4, 2004, Cadre Education will be hosting a House Party at 2994 Mt. Clair (eastside, baby). Project: A.R.T. members get a discount at the door and a guaranteed spot on the roster. There will be Open Mic for non-members. The party begins as early as 7pm.

Saturday, June 5th, 2004 we will be joing YARD for the Stop the Violence Rally. Tiana, a Project: A.R.T. Member will be performing on stage around 1:20pm. Project: A.R.T. will also be hosting a information booth in Hart Plaza this Saturday with speakers, a microphone and a amp for Project: A.R.T. members. The event starts at 12noon and lasts until 5pm. We will be passing out fliers regarding our upcoming events.

Every Sunday, Napolean's Retreat Lounge at 13635 W. Chicago hosts an Open Mic Hip Hop Night. Check it out.

I. ZigiDee BooM
Once again the ZigiDee Boom Hip Hop Variety Fest will take place this Wednesday, May 5th, 12noon to 2pm on Wayne St.'s Campus right outside the Student Center Bldg. Last Wednesday went really well. It turned out to be a good day weather wise so let's cross our fingers for this week. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO PERFORM, PLEASE MAKE CONTACT WITH THE ORGANIZATION SO WE CAN BE PREPARED. RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL OR CALL (313) 832-2030 AND LEAVE A MESSAGE.

II. Rehearsal
We have made contact with another organization that has rehearsal space in addition to the rehearsal space on WSU campus. We will be planning to hold rehearsals every Saturday during the Spring and Summer months. While it is not written in stone as of today, we want our members to begin to integrate this weekly rehearsal into their schedules. This is an opportunity for you to practice without an audience and to get real live feedback on our performance. Holla Back.

III. Board of Directors Meeting
On May 7th, from 5pm to 8pm, Project: A.R.T. will be conducting a Board of Directors meeting at WSU, Student Center Bldg., Room 299. We expect all of our board members to attend. If you are not a board members and are looking to make a larger commitment to the organization you are welcome to attend. However, you must be a member and you must let us know ahead of time that you will be attending so that we can be prepared. Attached are the responsiblities of a Board Member and/or WSU Chapter Officer.

IV. Committee Meeting
Project: A.R.T. will be hosting another committee meeting on Friday, May 14th from 5pm to 8pm at WSU, Student Center Bldg., Room 299. We expect all of our members to attend. Attached is a list of members that attended the last meeting and their assignments. We expect that those with assignments will come to this next meeting with an update either written or verbal.

V. New Business
We have partnered up with the Youth Development Institute (YDI) who are partners with the Substance Abuse Prevention program. They are hosting a Hip Hop Culture Summit on May 15th and have invited us to participate. We are still organization and negotiating our participation, however, all members should mark their calendars and be prepared to attend. There is a possibility for artists that perform to be paid IF, IF, IF, they can come up with an Anti-Smoking, Anti-Drug or Anti-Alcohol specific message. If we can prove to the YDI that we are professional, dedicated and positive, this partnership has the potential to be ongoing indefinitely.

We have also signed up to do the Motor City Makeover on May 15th. If we have enough volunteers we can certainly do both events. Please make contact (with a name, phone number/email address) if you want to participate in the Motor City MakeOver even if you have already done so. We are formulating a list and we don't want to leave anyone out. Also, if you have a place in mind to clean up, send that info (address/area/needs) as well.

We have also made contact with the Downtown YMCA. They are looking to contract Project:A.R.T. to do several Hip Hop Workshops for their students. We are still in the planning stages but keep your eyes open.

Additionally, we have made contact with the Partners for Peace and they have requested our presence in Benton Harbor to do a Hip Hop Workshop at the end of May.

We are asking that our members cross their fingers and think good thoughts so that we may progress as an organization this month. We will move faster, quicker and more efficiently as a group than if we tried to push forward as individuals.
